Celebrating Together and Supporting Those Who Support Us

As a charity trustee, you’ll often need to attend evening meetings, as well as training away days. With time in short supply, and many competing priorities, there are often sacrifices to be made and a very special commitment and loyalty is required.

However, it’s not only our trustees and advisors that do great work at YMCA East Herts. We also know that their families – husbands, wives, partners and children – make a sacrifice too. They support our Board by enabling …

Making An Impact – Facts and Stats 2017

Did you know that YMCA is the oldest and largest youth charity in the world, established in England in 1844? Over the years it has evolved into a global movement helping more than 58 million people across 199 different countries.

Here are some more Facts and Stats:

Across England and Wales, we operate as a federation with 116 local YMCAs working to support young people in almost 740 different communities. Building self-worth, self-confidence and independence, we impact upon the lives of more …

Welcome to Small Charity Week – 19th to 24th June 2017

Small Charity Week is a campaign which was first established by the Foundation for Social Improvement (FSI) in 2010 to celebrate and raise the profile of the small charity sector. This includes all charities with an annual turnover of up to £1.5m.

Each year, the week is organised into a series of activities and initiatives to support and raise awareness of the hundreds and thousands of small charities that, every day, make a huge difference to vulnerable communities.

YMCA Trustee Becomes Member of Parliament

One of our youngest Trustees, Fee Onasanya, won the Peterborough Constituency at last week’s General Election. Many congratulations to Fee for a wonderful and significant achievement.

For those who may not have seen it in the press, Labour gained the Constituency from the Conservatives after a nail-biting recount. The seat was too close to call in the exit polls and a recount of bundled votes delayed the final result.

Fee, who is a solicitor by profession, received 48.1 per cent of the …

YMCA East Herts – The Future

As YMCA England gives their Associations, such as ourselves, the opportunity to purchase local accommodation, YMCAs across the country are working more closely together to keep the assets within the YMCA Federation and preserve excellent quality work.

Unfortunately, it has recently become clear that we will not be in a position to purchase the YMCA England-owned accommodation we currently occupy at the 4 Northgate End premises in Bishop’s Stortford. Together with the changing financial and political climate we have had to …

Volunteers’ Week – A Time To Celebrate!

On the surface, saying thank you is easy – we all do it every day often without a great deal of thought. As volunteers don’t get paid, you might think that we should naturally be more inclined to thank them but sometimes we can take their generosity for granted, especially if they have been with us for some time.

Volunteering at YMCA East Herts enables members of our local community to take positive action to make a difference for a cause that they care about. We …

London Marathon Success for Team YMCA!

In total, runners from 11 different YMCAs, some from as far away as North Tyneside and Burton, made up Team YMCA at this year’s marathon. They all raised money to help fund the national work of the world’s largest youth organisation as well as community services provided by local YMCAs.

YMCA England & Wales is made up of 116 member YMCAs, which operate in almost 740 different communities, providing opportunities for young people to thrive and impacting upon the lives of …

YMCA Federation Launches New Strategy

YMCA is the largest and oldest youth charity in the world, helping more than 58 million people in 119 countries.

Across England and Wales there are 116 YMCAs. As a federation and as individual YMCAs, we are facing unprecedented economic, political and social challenges as well as great uncertainty. In response, we believe the need has never been greater for strong, locally engaged YMCAs to provide consistently high quality services with a strong national influence. However, a number of internal challenges, …

‘Churches Together’

YMCA East Herts is an associate member of Churches Together in Bishop’s Stortford. Each year we are represented at the Good Friday silent ‘Walk of Witness’ through the town – starting at the United Reformed Church and culminating at the Methodist Church.

The Walk is probably one of the most powerful and visible signs of faith that Churches Together provides to the people of our town. As hundreds of men, women and children walk silently, with a simple cross at the …

YMCA Speaks Out On Apprenticeships

The Government is working to oversee a rapid expansion of the apprenticeship system in an attempt to help young people gain the necessary skills to enter into the workplace and progress in their chosen career. However, despite the political capital afforded to them, apprenticeships continue to be seen as a ‘second class’ option for young people, and for others, not an option at all, echoing wider public perceptions.

To help address the shortcomings with the current apprenticeship offer and tackle these …

Sleep Easy 2017 – A Record!

46 members of the local community, including staff and residents of the YMCA, came together on Friday 24 March to help raise funds for vulnerable young people.

By sleeping rough for just one night the participants have, so far, raised over £4,600 for our YMCA. This is an amazing achievement and we are so grateful for all the support we have received. Although a fundraising event, it also had a very serious purpose – to encourage community groups in the town …

Sleep Easy

Our biggest fundraising event of the year is about to take place. We’ve set an ambitious target of £6,000 – can you help increase the amount we raise so that we can reach this target?

Mandy Taylor from Barclays Bank will be joining us on Friday night and will be ‘sleeping out’. Any sponsorship she receives on her MyDonate account will be doubled by Barclays – up to a maximum of £1,000.

So far £190 has been raised making £380 with the …

Rotary Satellite Group Gets Stuck In!

On Saturday 4 March, eleven eager volunteers came to our main Northgate End premises in Bishop’s Stortford to help paint the Residents’ Lounge. Led by Hugo Richardson, the members of the recently formed ‘Rotary Satellite Group’ rolled up their sleeves to fill-in holes, sand down walls, and add a fresh coat of paint.

It was a fun day (see the photos!), with tea and coffee flowing and a plentiful supply of biscuits – but it also had a more serious note. …

Don’t Miss This Year’s ‘Sleep Easy’ Event – 24.03.17 at Bishop’s Stortford College

By sleeping rough for just one night, you can help provide disadvantaged young people with an opportunity to reach their full potential and live independently.

Will you help us?

Our Sleep Easy will be held from 9pm on Friday 24 March 2017 to 7am on 25 March at the Bishop’s Stortford College. Each participant is required to pledge to raise as much money as possible through sponsorships with a minimum of £50. The registration fee is £10/adults or £7/children, and this covers …
